from: The Top 5 Reasons Video Conferencing Is Gaining In Popularity

The Top 5 Reasons Video Conferencing Is Gaining In Popularity
By Tim Gorman

Video conferencing is rapidly becoming more popular in business. There are a lot of reasons why, but mostly it's a case of businesses are finally beginning to realize the advantages of using videoconferencing. There are five main reasons why videoconferencing is such a great solution for business, so let's take a look at them.

Once of the most obvious advantages of videoconferencing is that it reduces the need for business travel. Petrol and oil prices have risen rapidly in recent times, which is inevitably going to make flying more expensive. If you have a choice of flying a dozen salespeople into your main head office for training, as an example, or hooking up a videoconference, it's easy to guess which is going to be more cost efficient. Videoconferencing can be used for training, business meetings, client presentations, interviews, client updates, and so on, all at a fraction of the cost involved in moving people around the country.

Secondly, broadband web access is getting cheaper every year, and although it's not essential for videoconferencing, it certainly helps to make it a lot less expensive. Currently, 85% of businesses use broadband rather than dial-up to connect to the internet, and that's only going to increase in the coming years. So as most businesses already have the broadband technology available at the workplace, hooking up a videoconference is made much simpler and cheaper. More than 60% of homes now have broadband too, so employees can easily join a videoconference from home.

Web cameras are also becoming more powerful and of a higher standard. It's possible to pick up a cheap web camera and still be able to transmit a picture of reasonable quality. This is helping videoconferencing become more widely used, as it's become so much simpler to join a group of people together using web cameras. Only a few years ago this wasn't possible, because the quality of web cameras was so poor. Now the images are much clearer, which helps make videoconferencing a success. Web cameras are easy to find, with computer and electronic stores as well as department stores having them available for anything from ten dollars right through to hundreds of dollars.

The fourth advantage of video conferencing is that if used correctly, it can vastly improve the productivity of your business. Yes, money is saved when people don't need to travel, but also an enormous amount of time is saved. By the time someone drives to the airport, goes through security, waits for their flight, flies, picks up their baggage at the other end, drives to a hotel.... half a day or more of productive time is lost. With videoconferencing, as soon as the meeting is over you can go back into your office and get on with your work, not spend another half a day traveling.

Video conferencing is also becoming more widely used in education at all levels. It's especially popular in the institutions of higher learning. Videoconferencing allows all sorts of new learning experiences to take place, and early results suggest that students gain a great deal from the experience of learning things in a visual way. It's easier to show how something is done, or learn about other cultures. It also means that an expert can spare an hour of time to talk to a class, without disrupting the day extensively. Previously, the expert may have had to put aside at least half a day to allow time to get to or from the school, which would make the idea of talking to a class less appealing.

These are only a few of the reasons why videoconferencing is rapidly gaining popularity, and as the years pass it's likely to gain an even stronger level of acceptance, particularly in business. Videoconferencing is the closest thing around to actually being with someone, without being there in person.
